Verner Panton’s Visiona 2 – a revolutionary design concept
In the context of the Cologne furniture fair in 1970 Bayer in cooperation with the Danish designer Verner Panton presented Visiona 2, an almost breathtaking interior staging wallowing in colors and forms. On the occasion of the exhibition’s 40th anniversary we took another look at this much discussed concept.

Year: 1970
A scenery formed from countless residential sculptures – this is the PHANTASY LANDSCAPE by cult designer Verner Panton. Within the scope of the Cologne furniture fair the Dane formed the psychedelic residential scenery as the heart of the Visiona 2 on the ship of the Bayer AG.

Year: 1968/69
Residential sceneries were Verner of Panton’s favorite subject. His LIVING TOWER, for the first time as a Phantasy Landscape on the Visiona 2 in completion presented, uses the three dimensions of space. The organically formed sculpture made from two compound elements can be used at four levels.

In the 70s Verner Panton fully dived into the world of colours and forms. Strengthened by the success – already at the Visiona 0 – he ventured incredibly avant-garde draughts. The VISIONA 2 resembled a creative fireworks.

Year: 1968
End of the 60s Verner Panton formed the exhibition on the so-called Drahlon ship for the chemistry company Bayer AG on occasion of the Cologne furniture fair. Untill the middle of the 70s Bayer rented a Rhine steamboat and allowed to furnish it by contemporary designers.

While the backrest of the Amoeba ends below the shoulders, the organically seeming seat back of the AMOEBA HIGHBACK stretches above the head of the sitter. This special form of design creates a space in the space and at the same time peruades security.

Year: 1969/70
To the Cologne furniture fair in 1970 Verner Panton sketched the RING LAMP. How the name already allows to suppose, the wall and covers light exists of rings becoming smaller inwards. Besides, the light source, integrated in the centre, forms the most internal circle.

Verner PANTON
Beginning and education
- Verner Panton sees on the 13th of February, 1926 in Brahesborg-Gamtofte on the island Fünen in Denmark the light of the world. At the age of 18 years the Dane moves to Odense. There he joins the military for two years. Parallely in addition he visits the Technical School, also in Odense, from 1944 to 1947. Following Verner Panton studies architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen (in 1947-1951) and begins to occupy himself with colour psychologie. During the study Tove Kemp crosses his way. The stepdaughter of the architect and designer Poul Henningsen marries Panton in 1950. Nevertheless, the marriage fails after only one year. Their common son passes away early. What remains is the friendship to Poul Henningsen which remains up to his death in 1967 Panton’s mentor.
